Fearlessness is to be admired

What's your biggest fear? I still struggle with heights. I remember as a teenager doing some work at the Silos. This was the Silo closest to the Farm where I grew up, the Bolangum Silo. It's no longer in use, but it's still a commanding landmark that can be seen from miles away. Anyway, me and this other Farmer's son, who was a year older than me, had to go to the top of the Silo to change something over. It was one of those old concrete ones that had an internal ladder, actually a series of internal ladders. The other guy went first, and I followed underneath. We got to the top alright and did whatever we had to do; then came down, and my memory was how flexible the steel ladders were, they wobbled. I can't really remember if I was scared at the time. But what I did back then, I wouldn't do now. There is no way, at 54 years of age, I would even get halfway up the first rung. Perhaps then I didn't know I had a fear of heights; perhaps my fear was discovered that day. Fearlessness is to be admired, so anyone who can scale heights, I think, is amazing. But I know that person is fearless when it comes to heights but they would have something else they were fearful of. It could be snakes, failure or public speaking. Are we born with these fears, or are they created by a terrible experience? Reply to [email protected]
