The other "why"

I was on a podcast the other day and was telling how I tried (I say "I" because it was my decision) but failed to replicate our Farm Tender business in the US. I was explaining what I thought was the reason why it failed. But the other day, when I revisited in my thoughts, I wanted to explore another why. That "why" was why did I want to go and replicate it in the first place. I came up with this. I look back, and there was definitely a bit of ego involved; at the time, I was looking for a challenge, and I had a fixation with the US and really wanted to explore the place. I knew when we got there that it could fail; that was part of my thoughts, but I also knew it couldn't succeed, too. This is what I was telling myself at the start, but really, I didn't know what the outcome would be. It really came back to an itch I needed to scratch, something I had to do to test myself and prove that I was capable of pulling something like this off. You know, you would have had times where you just don't want to play safe, you don't want to conform, you want to go out on a limb and just see how it goes. I knew I wasn't putting the Australian arm of the business at risk by at least having a try, and I did have it in my head that if I couldn't get something going in 12 months, it was time to quit. It didn't work out, and I am happy to say it failed, but shit, we learnt a lot. And for that very reason, if you have an itch you want to scratch, don't hesitate for one minute. Is there something you want to do but haven't got around to it yet? Is there something you have done that has put you out on a limb, and it has either succeeded or failed? Reply to [email protected]
