Money on the Bar

It was Friday night last night, and a few people I know refer to it as stepping-out night. It was more of a tradition, say, 10 or 20 years ago, that Farmers would head to their local pub on a Friday night to debrief the week that was and enjoy a beer or 7. I remember it well, and I remember it was always exciting when Friday came around. It was also the time when we dealt in cash and cheques. Remember going into the bar and plonking down a $10 or $20 note, and it would last you the night with change. You also had great faith in the person behind the bar and your fellow drinkers that your money was safe in that spot. There was also a situation where you couldn't get to a bank or ATM for cash, and you couldn't find the cheque book, and you would book the Friday night beers and maybe a feed on your tab. Then the next Friday you would fix it up. You could also cash a cheque at the pub. We'll look back and marvel at how we just took these things for granted and how simple they were. It was a trusting world back then. But I, for one, am glad I never have to carry cash around again. And as for a tab, I bet some pubs still have them. Can you remember the cash on the bar, cheque and tab days?  Reply to [email protected]
