The Townie Farmer

Yesterday, we wrote about how there are plenty of vacant homes in rural areas, and it's probably increasing as Farms consolidate and labour efficiencies get better. Someone mentioned in the replies below that there was a trend in his area (The Yorke Peninsula of SA) for Farmers to live in town. Or perhaps a hybrid version of that where one of the partners lives in town full time and the Farmer either commutes daily, or camps in the Farm House during the week or during the peak work times. For those that have done it, there are some benefits here, like knocking off and leaving the Farm behind for a while. It's hard when you live at your workplace. Then there's the disadvantage of not having your kids grow up on the Farm. There are numerous advantages and disadvantages. I lived 30 minutes from the Farm for a couple of years, and I used to enjoy commuting time as a time to think and relax. Are you a Townie Farmer? or is it something you just couldn't do?  Reply to [email protected]
