The Farming partnership that never was
John Gladigau just recently exited the most watched Collaborative Farming partnership in the land, Bulla Burra. John did a Nuffield Scholarship on the subject and was sort of forced to put into practice what he preached. John spoke at our FarmTender2024 event (which subscribers can watch below) and relayed a story about another pair of Farming mates who wanted to form a Collaborative partnership. John was mentoring them at the time and went along to visit them on-Farm for a chat on how they intended to go about it. A bit of a red flag had risen when John asked about whether their wives were all for it. They said yes, they are supportive, but they’ve actually never met. At the end of the meeting, John said righto, you guys need to test the water before you make it official, so he suggested a good start would be to do the upcoming Harvest together. They agreed to do that. When John rang one of the potential partners to see how they went doing the Harvest together, the Farmer said ah, well, we are not going ahead with it anymore. They realised that they have different standards when it comes to alot of things, and once they understood that, they knew they couldn’t work together. John said he had a feeling it wasn’t going to work. So John, who was the unofficial spokesman for collaborative Farming, actually ends up talking more people out of doing it than doing it. Could you ever work in some kind of partnership? Reply to [email protected]
