Line in the sand time
Ask anyone who attends regular Field Days, and many will say that the Mallee Machinery Field Days are their favourite. It's just a genuine event with the most Farmer-centric crowd of any Field Day. This one hasn't succumbed to the lifestylers yet. The event is on the 31st of July and the 1st of August (2 days), and most Mallee Grain Farmers (SA and Vic) know that it's also a line in the sand time as to which way the season goes. If it's on the dry side at that point, then the Crops are going to struggle; if there is good moisture in the profile, then things start to become promising. I have been there sometime when it's been hot and dusty, and the season has made its mind up. Equally, I have been there when it's been bitterly cold with the Crops look superb, and you just know they will finish well. I haven't been for a drive up that way and won't get there next week but I am told the guys in the Northern Mallee are looking for a drink right now. I often write about how the Mallee Farmers have found the secret sauce: managing moisture. They are just so good at it now. It's also interesting why many have gone away for Sheep. It's an area that is very good for Sheep, but Sheep are not good for the area. I will explain why another day. Do you have a Mallee Farming story? Reply to [email protected]
