The “Club Notes” for Wednesday, the 24th of July, 2024.

One at the expense of another
I attended the Australian Wool and Sheep Show at Bendigo last Friday and Saturday and had a good chat with alot of Farmers. The general sentiment was pretty positive in that the season is back on track for those who had a dry Autumn and has continued for those who managed a good start. Overall attendances were average albeit the Friday was frigid, and the Saturday was just as cold but windy. The event has its core group that comes every year, rain, hail, or shine. The cost of living must have caught up with the townies, as there were fewer of them. I reckon there was a slight drop in trade exhibitors, but All the Sheep Studs were out in force as it’s an important year to be marketing your wears. It’s an interesting scenario as there is only a certain number of Ewes to join, and the studs are fighting for Ram sales. It seems there has been an influx of new studs over the last 10 years, and I guess a similar amount has dropped off. It’s a bit of a Ram-go-round in that for one Stud to increase sales, they have to do it at the expense of another stud. Those who market well and are polished with their information seem to be the ones who are taking market share. Add to that it’s been a tighter year income-wise, and what happens is Commercial Breeders tend to give the older Rams another year so they don’t have to buy as many. It will be very interesting to see how the Ram sales go. What is your tip? Reply to [email protected]
