The 1982 drought

Many of you would remember the 1982 drought. I was 12 at the time, and I can remember that we planted all the Crops, and they came up, but by June, they were stuffed. I think if we had today's no-till practices back then, we might have been a little different. I remember feeding hungry Sheep with bags of Wheat off the back of the Old Holden Ute on paddocks that resembled a moonscape. I can remember it rained in March 1983, which broke the drought, and it was a ripper season. I can't really remember much more, but I was told that in 1982, the Marnoo Pub (no longer alive) had its best year ever. The Marnoo community had some good consumers back then, and they loved nothing more than to gather in the Pub after a hard day's toil. No different to any other Farming community. But it interested me that they had their best year in a drought when incomes would have been next to nothing. Was it a place where you could go to talk about what you were going through with others who were going through the same thing? Maybe it was a form of mental health relief without them ever knowing it. Or maybe they just wanted to drown their seasonal sorrows with a few beers. Can anyone remember the things you were doing during the 1982 drought? Reply to [email protected]
