The Farmers Club
The “Club Notes” for Saturday, the 14th of September, 2024.
By Dwain Duxson - An Ag Enthusiast
As simple as it is unique
Yesterday, I saw the most unique Cropping program I have ever seen in my life. I will probably reflect more on it over the weekend as it's still pretty raw in my mind. We wrote a story in the paid section of this newsletter, and because I had a bit on yesterday, I copied and pasted it over to our Farm Tender Daily newsletter for yesterday. It was about Farming legend Harry Bourchier and how he purchased the Goroke (Vic) Property of Mortat. Read the story here. After I wrote the story, Bill Bourchier (Harry's son), who is a subscriber, invited me out to have a look around Mortat. Wow, what a Property and I can see why Harry bought it. Harry has passed on, and it's Bill who has put his stamp on the Property, having gotten rid of the Sheep side of things a decade ago. Now, the 17,500-acre Property is wall-to-wall Crop. 2 Crops only, Canola and Wheat. The Property has no fences and has a grid-like system of internal roads and they only Sow North and South. The longest Sowing run is 8km. They use Disc Seeders and then Sow over these built-up and graded grid roads and then spray the roads out when the Crop comes up. They burn everything every year. There are quite a few trees on the place, and all the sticks are always picked up. They hand spray around the trees to prevent any weeds from forming. The set-up of the system and how they manage it is focused on reducing weeds, and the Crops are all super clean. Instead of going around the swamps, they have incorporated them into the Cropping runs. You have to see it to believe it. I was truly blown away, and Bill's dad, Harry, would have been super proud of the way Bill has done it. More next week, maybe. Reply to [email protected]
