We have talked about businesses and even industries that might disappear before our eyes in these high-cost economic conditions. I see where Australia Post made an 88.5 million loss after making a 200 million loss last year. The letter part of their business is a thorn in their side because it’s cumbersome, and returns are extremely small despite attempts to put stamp prices up over the years. The parcel business is better but still highly competitive. I have conducted a couple of bits of business with the Post Office over the last few months, and the bits I did were time-consuming for the person behind the counter and would have returned very little. I suspect I was at the counter for one job for 45 minutes, which cost me something like $24. I got some printing done on another occasion, and it cost 50 cents a sheet. Many of the dealings across the counter are small penny stuff. They have tried to add a retail division, but I look around, and much of the stuff they try to sell is junk. Now, I am not saying the Post Office is going to disappear, but if they are taking on more of the over-the-counter banking work for the banks, they would want to negotiate some very good deals.
