Is Corn the next big thing?
As we mentioned yesterday, we are at the Cotton Conference on the Gold Coast. I am learning so much about the industry, and with all but full water allocations in the Cotton-Growing areas, the Farmers are up and about. Cotton has been the mainstay for a while now, and the Crop has moved South with the establishment of varieties that suit cooler climates. This has been a game changer and allowed those further South, even right down to the NSW/Vic border, to take part. But there's a new Crop emerging that's rivalling Cotton for margin, and that's Corn. Some I talk to are getting into Corn/Maize in a big way. Corn is a prolific yielder and is becoming more popular as a Livestock Feed source that many are only just discovering. I was talking to one Rural retailer, and she said that it doesn't matter what the cost is to move into a new industry like Corn; they just do it. Many have gone from Sheep or Cattle to Cotton and have done very well and realised that it's all about margin, so they need to invest. New on-Farm Corn drying facilities are popping up constantly. It makes you wonder, what's the next big thing on the horizon after Corn? There will be something. Reply to [email protected]
