Learning from Uncle Sam

A subscriber who is currently in America sent me this: “Hi Dwain, 10 years ago we lived and travelled the US. I was amazed at the conditions of the roads, manufacturing and self-reliability. Back again now, not one pothole. Fuel is under a $1 litre. A bottle of Jack Daniel 1.7 litre is $30, and Farmers drive their oversized Tractors down the freeway with no escort. I think Australia can learn a lot from Uncle Sam”. We also lived in the US for 12 months and experienced all those and more. I remember I had to start a company and also open bank accounts, and everyone involved was so helpful. And he is right about the roads. They are amazing, with most made out of concrete, with a gap in each slab, and I remember the clunk, clunk as you drove over the gap in each slab. It kept you awake. I am not saying that their country is any better than ours; it’s just less red tape and regulation and a bit more common sense. And I’d say it’s a bit easier to do business. He is correct.
