Not one size fits all
I was speaking to a Sheep Breeder yesterday who had a different take on Nigel Kerins's theory of high input/output Pastures. We wrote about it yesterday. Firstly, this Farmer agrees with Nigel's concept and does practise something a bit similar on one of his Properties. This Farmer has the agistment rights to our Property (Fook Farm) here, and there is a good reason why he never went down the high input pasture route. One word: Kangaroos. We were talking about the high input/high output model, and he mentioned that if he sowed Pastures here and whilst the paddocks were spelling, the Kangaroos would have done some damage. The Pastures here are adequate at best, but it's high rainfall, and his Ewes and Lambs have done super on them with the help of the supplementary Feeding with Barley. So he put the money from what could have been pasture renovations into Feed Barley, which meant that the Kangaroos couldn't get at it. His other property, about 15km away, is Kangaroo free, and his Pasture renovation there has been a great success, with no supplementary Feeding needed. We all know that not all Farming practices work the same everywhere. That's part of the skill of Farming is to adapt to each situation and run with what works best.
