The poor bastards of Canberra

We are currently up in Canberra for the NFF conference. I am writing this as we are 10 minutes into the event, and plenty of people are here. And boy, they run a flash show. It's a bit flasher than our FarmTender2024 - Entrepreneurs in Agriculture event, and the MC is a bit more polished. We came to Canberra early to get a feel for the place. The last time we were here, the Airport was a little bit flasher than the Farm Machinery Shed. Boy, that has changed. So has Canberra. We are staying in a hotel that looks over a car park. I have noticed that they trudge into work with a stern look on their faces, heading to their boring Government jobs and into those bland Government buildings. I bet you're glad you're a Farmer. Splitting up the Farm

I read with interest that the MacLahlan empire, Jumbuck Pastoral, is set to be split between family members. It's an Aussie Pastoral icon, and it just proves that even the biggest and most iconic have to go through what all of us are facing, generational change. It's inevitable, and some do generational change well, and others don't. I feel for you if you are one of the ones doing it tough. I read that half the US Famland will change hands in the next decade. That's alot of Land. I guess it would be similar here. Here's a tip, if you are young, a good career in Ag would be a Rural Property Agent. There will be plenty of work. Read the story below. How are you going with generational change? Not many Farmers here but plenty of hangeronerers

I have been to a fair share of Ag events over the years. I am constantly amazed at how these Ag events aren't Farmer-friendly. As I listen to another sponsor speak, I keep learning alot more about what not to do. There are Farmers here, yes, many who have dual roles in Agriculture, like newly elected NFF President David Jochinke, who doubles as a Farmer. But these events attract 3rd party service providers (yes, I am one) or what some might call hangeronerers. That's probably a bit rude and even a tad disrespectful, but it's how it is. As a Farmer, what Ag events do you go to? Reply to [email protected]

About new NFF President David "DJ" Jochinke

David Jochinke has been in Agri Politics for a long time. We like David as he is a great supporter of our Farm Tender business. Many of you would know DJ well. He is real and passionate. David stumbled through his opening speech but got the message across that he is not going to stand up to labour's anti-Farmer policies. I like how he stumbled through his talk. It means he is human, and not all of us are built for public speaking. I know a few polished ones, and many of them are boring. And I know some will criticise his not-so-polished delivery style, but he will get better. Good luck in your role, David. You have so much to do. Read a bit of press below. In your view, what is the most important issue DJ need to address? Reply to [email protected]

End of message.
