5 days to go

Our FarmTender2024 - Entrepreneurs in Farming event is not far away. Click here for more info. See the media release here. Read some of the questions we are going to ask: Danny Thomas, Rob Dawes, Claire Booth, Andrew Weidemann, David Jochinke, John Gladigau, Hayley Grosser, Cassidy Johnston, Jeff McDonald, Broden Holland and Sam Van Assche.

Keep Friday aside

We have talked about how getting off the Farm for at least a day to stimulate the brain and give you a bit of a mental break from the daily activities. So, I am asking that you keep this Friday free and come along to our FarmTender2024 - Entrepreneurs in Farming event held in the Glendemar Woolshed at Marnoo in Victoria. We know how Farmers operate and how many won't commit until closer to the mark. I get that. I can promise you that it will be an event where you will learn so much, not just from the inspiring speakers we have but from the Farmers in the room. You will get access to some of the best Farmers going around, and there will be plenty of time to network. Plus, you have to see the Woolshed; it's a ripper. So, I personally invite you to join us on Friday, and I would love nothing better than to catch up for a beer and sausage after the event. All welcome. Reply to [email protected]

Blue Gums return

We reported a month or so ago how a German company was buying up prime Dairy country in southern Victoria to grow Trees to harvest the Cabon Credits and take them back to Germany to offset other businesses they own. A similar thing is happening near Portland in South West Vic. This is a bit of a concern that big companies with plenty of resources are buying up our prime Farming Land to be used for something other than Farming. There would be many of these companies around the world that would need to offset and have the resources to outbid a Farmer every time. See the news story below. Have you heard of something similar in your area, and do you have an opinion on this? Reply to [email protected]

Fire Maps

I am a lover of Google Maps. I use them all the time, and it's even an entertainment thing at times. I live in Victoria, and before Google Maps came along, the CFA (Country Fire Authority in Victoria) had the Fire Maps. Remember them? I also used to love them because they had great details, and I reckon they had Farmers properties pin-dropped. Did other States have these Maps? Reply to [email protected]

Your replies

Below are snippets from some of the replies you sent in. All quotes will remain nameless. See a few current ones below:

  • “I bought a Land Rover Defender 30 years ago, it's rugged, dependable, has no electronics and is simple to work on. The more plastic and electronic Utes get the less likely I am to trade up (down)” - In reply to our note on what is your favourite Ute ever.

  • “My most favourite Ute was a WB I had. Bit off-topic but I have a 1951 FX Ute which is the first year they started making the Holden Ute. It is registered so I drive it occasionally. Love The Farmers Club” - Another favourite Ute.

  • “The modular Shearing stands are handy as in their own right. But I reckon the real benefit is in neighbours getting their heads together and 3 or 4 farmers who all Shear one after each other, all buying and storing one, then lend them to each other, they’re made to fit on a Semi or Flat Top Trailer. I reckon they have spots built in for the forks to lift them. No one's left without one stand for the tidy-up jobs throughout the year, no one has a massive outlay for stuff all return”. - An idea from a young Farmer in reply to having Shearing Sheds as Multi-use. It has merit.

  • Also just a comment on your side hustle. I’m not so sure about them. I’ve had one for 30-odd years now, it’s called a Farm. All it seems to do is gobble up time and money, just as well I enjoy it. - Just a passing comment by Farmer.

End of message.

Random and associated Ag articles and images.

I was writing this morning’s newsletter on the deck of our Woolshed on Sunday night. It was a beautiful evening despite some smoke around from the Mt Cole fire. Our thoughts are with anyone affected.

Stubble funnels, first time I have heard that terminology.

Interesting stat out of the US.

Qube are getting into the Grain Trading.

Good one Tony - Monday funny.

Farming people getting stuff done.

Guesses I would say.

Cattle on Feed steady.

Currency - We put our old Steel tank up yesterday next to the Woolshed. The trading currency for the Crane Driver was a slab of Carlton Dry.

I would say that is pretty heavy.

Love the old Shearing Shed pictures

This guy knows his stuff and has been spot-on about Ag Tech over the last 5 years.

Another bad day is coming on Wednesday. Stay safe out there.

Coming - Who is going to buy one?

How good.

Monday funny.

This is a worry. See the story above.
