Most advanced Farm ever

I reckon I have just stumbled across the most technologically advanced Farm on the planet. Jame Dyson, yes, the Vaccum guy is also a Farmer. His Dyson Farming organisation own 36,000 acres in Britain, grows a wide range of Crops, and also runs Sheep and Cattle. It’s been set up as a circular Farming system where Crops are cut and turned into Gas, then electricity with the capacity to power up to 10,000 homes. They also use the heat from the process to power a 14-acre Strawberry Glasshouse. They create their own Fertiliser from the waste, and the list goes on. It’s a fascinating 6-minute YouTube video on what a clever Farming system he and his Dyson Farming team have developed. You can watch it by clicking on the link here or see the video in the first image space below. Reply to [email protected]

Learning comes from experiencing things

Someone pointed out to me over the weekend what an amazing resource we have in our have in our older more experienced Farmers. Apart from the knowledge they have built up over the years, I think the most important thing they can really do for younger Farmers is to relay the experiences they have been through. Experiencing droughts on many occasions and coming out the other side of them means that they don’t hold as much fear as if you might be going through one for the first time. Other experiences like low Commodity prices, when these prices are below the cost of production and when it last for years, is very character-building stuff. Experiencing these and the many other good and bad things Farming serves up is where the serious learning happens. What would be the biggest learning experience you have been through in your Farming career? Reply to [email protected]

Old boots new fashion

With all these billionaires buying up our iconic country brands like RM Williams, RB Sellers, Rossi Boots, Akubra, and Driza-Bone, it will be interesting to see where they take them. Rossi Boots is an interesting one as they are competing in a hot market. I have bought Rossi Work Boots on occasions, and they are a very good product. In fact, those and Blunstone Work Boots have become a bit of a trend for wearing outside of work. But they have to have that worn-in look, probably 6 months of Farm work before they cut it as a new going-out fashion item. I am seeing them more, and even some of the so-called celebrities are joining in. Similarly, the well-worn Akubra can be a fashion item as well. It’s a bit like having a green John Deere cap; they were pretty cool there for a while. Can you please tell us about what you like to wear for both work and play? Reply to [email protected]
