Time does the work
As Farmers, we work hard. Too hard in some cases. Our great industry of Farming is not for the faint hearted. To be involved in Farming, or the wider Agriculture sector for that matter, you have to have patience. The reason being, is nothing happens quickly in Ag and not everything goes your way. There are a lot of steps back and forth. But if you think about getting ahead in Ag, then it is through incremental gain, which we have written about on numerous occasions. When I saw a quote from Charlie Munger (Charlie died a couple of days ago aged 99), I thought this sums up how you become a success in Farming. The quote was, "Time does all the work". It's a simple quote that is so related to what we do. It's almost a quote that makes you feel relaxed. So don't rush, as time will do the work. Have a great weekend. Reply to [email protected]
Clever MLA Clever
You have probably seen the new Red Meat ad by MLA. If you haven't, take a look below. There has been a lot of thought go into this one, and I would label it as clever. We all have a preference as to whether we are Lamb or Beef people, and I'm sure that most of us enjoy both. So please share it around with your friends and family, especially the city-based one. It's a great initiative by MLA, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it stemmed from a tweet that Tim Neale sent out a couple of months ago. See the tweet below. Reply to [email protected]
Try the Kiwi's
As mentioned, I was at a conference in Swan Hill on Thursday and Friday. Liam Leneghan, for goFARM, spoke about his journey through Agriculture and how he created the large-scale business he is running today. It was an interesting story, and I'd describe him as someone who buys Farms, puts them together to form scale, then renovates them and sells them off. They have investors, so there has to be some kind of exit point. Like most in Agriculture, Liam is having trouble finding people. So they have cast the net a little wider than normal and found some good staff from New Zealand. He said the ones they are getting have been frustrated with the Dairy industry over there and are sick of all the environmental policies that Jacinda Adern introduced. They are more than happy to come to Australia. So, if you are looking for people, don't dismiss New Zealand. Reply to [email protected]
Learning the art of batting
It's Saturday, so let's talk cricket. I was a keen cricketer for about 35 years, and I loved the science of batting. Batting is one of those things where you wish you knew what you knew at the end of your career at the start of your career. So, in other words, learning to bat takes time. It's a bit like the top story above in regards to time. When you are young, you just see ball, hit ball, and it just happens, your eyesight and reflexes are at their peak. Once you start to move through your 20's you start to learn your limitations but also work out your strengths. And I think the period from about 28 to 35 is when you are at your batting peak. I reckon it wasn't until about 30 that I started to actually watch the ball. The things you learn along the way are sometimes only subtle but important in your development. Then post 35, things start to happen, that never happened before. Like you start missing balls that you never missed before, some of the shot execution decisions aren't the same as they once were, your judgement is a little less, and the results taper off. So there's a rise for several years and a fall for several years. I just can't really pinpoint the moment in time where that peak was. But it's great to reflect on how it all unfolded. When did you peak in your sporting career? Reply to [email protected]
