No money no worries

We'll continue with our Harry Bourchier stories this week as I have had lots of ideas since I visited his son Bill's place at Goroke last Friday. Harry was self-made, and when he came home from school and found out his Father was going to hand in the lease for the Land he was renting near Charlton, Harry insisted that his Father go back and re-lease the small block of Land. Harry had it in his mind that he and his brother would run it. So he was quite unique Harry, in that his Father never had any of his traits. Early days he and his brother did the rounds, slushing Dams for Farmers around the district. Harry was smart, could seek out a deal and was a great reader. But he had a work ethic that was as good as anyones. Before he bought Mortat, he had a sequence of Farms spread around the place. Some he sold to move to another place. He seeked out bargains, and it didn't matter what area. Through his reading, he always had his ear to the ground. One of the deeming features of Harry was that a lot of the time when he bought a Property, he had no money, and that was one of his skills was to work out how he could fund it, and he used vendor terms alot. When he went into the Mortat deal (with no money, some equity, yes), he had a Property south of Goroke. He was expected to sell that to fund Mortat, a much bigger Property, but he didn't sell it at all. When he bought Mortat, he went into town and alerted all the suppliers that he could not pay them until after Harvest, they were fine with that and gave Harry the inputs he needed to grow the Crop. He always found a way. I wrote that Harry had 7 kids when, in fact, it was 9, and 7 of them are now in Farming. Bill worked out that between all the descendants, they are Farming over 170,000 acres today. What a legacy. Reply to [email protected]
