What's your get out of bed motive?

A Farmer said to me yesterday, "I didn't know there were so many topics to write about in Ag. How do you come up with them all?" And this is not an about-me session, as we stay very humble around here. But I just thought I would share with you some of the tools we use to gather stories. These are not in any order. 1) Reading - Off and on, I would spend a fair chink of my day reading. I do not read books but read articles and documents, blogs, newsletters, posts and newspapers, virtually I can get my hands on. I think reading or gathering information is one of the best things we can do to cultivate our curious minds. 2) Listening - There are probably 2 parts here. One is listening to people and listening hard. I hear statements or sentences from people, and sometimes, I will get them to repeat them. Because sometimes I can get a topic from what they are saying indirectly rather than directly. Similarly, when I listen to podcasts, I am forever going back a re-listening. Listening hard is a learnt skill for me. 3) Feedback - We would get between 15 to 25 reply emails and texts a day in reply to our stories. Many topics and ideas for stories come from your feedback. 4) Observing - I love nothing more than a road trip to observe what's going on around us. You can pick up so much from that. 5) Persistence - I would sit at my laptop for anywhere up to 15 hours a day. This includes my Farm Tender work. Yep, that's probably not a great thing to reveal, but that's what I need to do, and I love doing it. All that motivates me out of bed each morning.
