No 320 - Wednesday's Club Notes

The “Club Notes” for Wednesday, the 25th of September, 2024.

A worry or not?

Leading Sheep industry identity Tom Bull probably got the shock of his life the other day when he heard this: “Spoke to a group of 45 Year 11 Ag students last week. When asked the question, when you leave school, how many plans to work on a Beef operation (up North)?’ 25 said yes. How many are going Jackerooing or onto a Sheep place? No one put their hand up”. It’s a bit of a shock to me. Is it a shock to you? I mean, the station gig up North has sold itself well. The once popular (it probably still is) RM Williams Outback Magazine featured ads from any of the big Cattle companies worth their toast who are advertising their wears for young people to head north and have an adventure. This was in every monthly edition and still continues today. At the same time, it might only be one or two of the Sheep (I think Jumbuck Pastoral might do it) operators that do the same thing. It wasn’t so long ago that the Jillaroo/Jackaroo system was the adventure of choice for the young ones. Has the Sheep industry got to this point where it’s going to struggle to find people, or is it just a trending adventure that people do for a year or two and branch out to another gig after that?
