My bad judgment…..

Yesterday, we spoke about how we used to have a Tractor with no brakes and how it used to make you very aware when it come to Creek Crossings, busy Roads etc. When I was back on the Farm, we considered ourselves pretty lucky in the fact that we lived away from main roads, and droving Sheep was pretty simple. That’s until we bought a block North of the Wimmera Hwy. I remember crossing that Highway with a mob of Sheep on many occasions, with some near misses from drivers just not paying any attention. We had signs, flashing lights and people waving their arms and still some never slowed down. But it was once I remember we had to load young Sheep for the abattoir, and it was wet, and our yards at the North Block had no all-weather access. So we asked a neighbour if we could yard them at his shed, and he obliged. I remember it was late in the arvo, and I had to get this mob in and drove them down the Donald/Marnoo Road, which can get busy enough. I’d left my run too late, and it started to get dark, but I ploughed on and hunted the Sheep hard. I had all the lights and signs and had about 50 metres to go, and an old fella coming towards me ploughed into the mob and took out about 10, and injured another 5. No one should be driving Sheep in the dark down the road, so it was my bad judgement and fault that caused this chaos. There was minimal damage to the car, and we managed to get the Sheep in the yards and load the dead and injured into the trailer. I learnt a valuable lesson that night.
