When opportunities are just that

Angus Whyte is a Sheep Farmer in the station country in Western NSW. I follow him on social media and have respect for what he says. His words are wise. I got to meet him and his wife, Kerry up at the Rangeland conference last week, and we had a good chat. Angus's core business is Sheep, and occasionally, he gets the opportunity to do some Lakebed Cropping. This year was the year where all the stars lined up, which allowed him to proceed. He has just finished Baling a huge Oaten Hay Crop and has a couple of varieties of Oats to Harvest as well as some Wheat. I asked how often these Lakebed opportunities come around, and he said the last time he did it was 12 years ago. He said there were years where he could have done it but stuck to his rules around the amount of moisture in the ground. It got me thinking about discipline. Obviously, he is going to make a huge margin this year (it's low input Cropping), and the discipline would be to do it in those years where there might be a small opportunity. But he doesn’t Remember how Farmers used to use fallow as their friend, and then we went to continuous Cropping. Not that we were undisciplined by dropping off fallow. We just saw the opportunity to grow a Crop on each paddock year in and year out. We have written about how the Station guys view opportunity before and how they are more careful with money than, say, an inland Farmer. What are some of the Farming things you are disciplined about? Reply to [email protected]
