No plan No worries

This is going to grate some people who swear by a good plan and only ever feel a level of comfort when they have one. I heard a speaker at the Rangeland conference last week who said this: "We don't need a plan, we just need to be prepared". I am a bit of a subscriber to this one as I have never been a great planner, but I have always been prepared, so it was music to my ears. Many people need to have both short and long-term goals; they feel they don't have purpose in what they are doing if they don't have goals or plans. When they say being prepared, to me, that might mean managing cash flow and having money put aside for things that won't become a shock when they present. But it's not only cash flow, we can be prepared for all things that are in our control within our businesses. A plan, to me, backs you into a corner. Like the ones that say they are going to be net zero by 2030 or Car companies saying they will cut our combustion engines by 2028. To me, this is business suicide, and we are already starting to see companies reverse those once-held promises. It can also send you in the wrong direction, down the wrong rabbit burrow. The same speaker said this: We are constantly over-planning and setting too many goals, and it can be an unnecessary waste of energy. Are you a great planner, or are you more of a preparer? Reply to [email protected]
