Nearly Woolshedless

Back when I was on the Farmer, we had this 120-year-old Woolshed, which wasn’t one of those classic old Sheds you see in the Riverina, it was one of those low-to-the-ground ones that had been added to and added to. It was also one of those ones where you had to pull the battens up to clean the shit out. That was a big job, not just cleaning it out but getting the battens back in their rightful place. My brother and father decommissioned it a few years back and built a new one. Back about 20 years ago, the old Shed caught alight. The old man was pressure washing the Shed one time after Shearing, and somehow, one of the light switches got hot and flared up. He must have gone out for a while and came back, and the switch was alight. He put it out. We chipped him for years that he should have let it burn as we had it insured and could have done with a new shed at the time. What got me thinking of this story was Darren Thomas from Thomas Food International said on this podcast that processors are always joking about their Processing plants burning down. I guess, at times, they have been pretty tough businesses, and the joke was to let them burn and collect the insurance. But one day, Darren’s Murray Bridge facility did burn down, and it wasn’t a joke anymore. I guess when it happens, it’s a different story. We never ever thought of being Woolshedless.
