Trusting tech

Over the last few weekends and during part of Melbourne Cup day, we have been putting in a new lawn, complete with an automated inground sprinkler system. I got the local irrigation people to design it all, and I bought all the required bits and pieces through them. I went home, hired a trencher, and we put it all in. Luckily for us, it all worked fine manually. We then planted the Kikuyu runners on Melbourne Cup day; in total, it is probably a bit over an acre in area. Because I needed to go away, I wanted to make sure I was around to see that all the automated time slots and watering times were working fine. I then tried to run the automated system through the app on my phone, but for some reason, I couldn't get the app to work. I got the Irrigation tech out, and she couldn't work it out either. So, we decided to set it up through the box (as opposed to the app). I set up a mini-run and thought it was working fine, but I made a mistake, which meant that each time, it irrigated the areas 3 times instead of once. I was away at this point, so Paula and I had a Facetime hook-up, and we fixed the mistake. It's right now, but the point I want to make was I wanted to be there physically to make sure it was working fine. I could only trust the technology when I saw it working. This is low-tech compared to setting up, say, a late model Header, but I'm sure people only trust that it's set up when there's Grain repeatably coming in the tank and not too much out the back. Do you need to be constantly monitoring the tech? Reply to [email protected]
