Reality is the undefeated champion

The headline is a statement I heard over the weekend. Apparently, Amazon creator Jeff Bezos said it. I guess you could relate it to the current cost of living crisis, where people are spending their pennies on keeping their families fed and watered. Whereas before, when they had a bit more disposable income, they might have bought a speedboat. Now that the speedboat has gone, they are back to reality. They have given up those nice-to-have-but-not-necessary things. We tend to stray away from reality all the time. We head down a track where we think things are headed, only at some point we head back to reality for a reset. I guess that’s why the saying reality bites was invented. I was told by a mate who is working with a gas company that the Victorian government is going out of its way to help them establish a new Gas project. Twelve months earlier, the Vic government was banning Gas, but they soon worked out that if they did, there would be all sorts of problems. So now, after reality came back to roost they are helping the Gas companies to produce more Gas. In my business life, I have headed down tracks I thought might be the way to go, only to realise that it’s not, and back we go, sticking to what we do as core every day. I had a full-on reality check just last week. So yes, Bezos is right; reality is the undefeated champion. Have you had a reality check recently? Reply to [email protected]
