Necessary evil or…..

We have written a couple of posts over the time on insurance and get a lot of replies centred around the rises in the cost and how Farmers are now picking and choosing what they insure. Some are ever self-insuring. I know when I was back on the Farm, insurance was pretty simple; you just rolled it over each year with little or no changes. According to a few Croppers I talk to regularly the Crop Insurance side of things has got expensive. I can actually remember doing the Crop insurance assessment with our then-Dalgety agent around the kitchen table. You would just run around all the paddocks and give a rough guide on the yield (bags per acre) and the price, and you were away and racing. But is Crop insurance a necessary evil? Is it something not worth taking the risk on? The upfront investment that goes into Crops these days is massive, so can you afford not to insure? But then, we are only insuring against one thing: hail. Could it be something you self-insure? What’s your take on Crop insurance? Reply to [email protected]
