Is the fake meat era over?

The fake meat trend was at its peak about 6 or 7 years ago. It's now a shadow of its former self. But back then, companies were popping up all over the place, and money from investors was flowing like confetti. The media was in ruptures, and the hype was through the roof. Restaurants, Supermarkets and the fast food industry wanted it on their menus/shelves, and the "real" meat industry was concerned but putting on a brave face. I think most in the meat industry weren't overly concerned about fake replacing real. But what they were pissed off about was them using the word meat and all the other associated words and brands that we associate with the real stuff. I tried a few of their products, but it was clear it was nothing quite like what they were trying to replace. In fact, it was a long way off. Beyond Meat is a great example of the demise of this industry. The listed NASDAQ company once had a market Cap of $US11.2 Billion; it's now at US$343 million. A massive drop. The word flexitarian was the description of a sometimes meat eater, sometimes non-meat eater. It was a word bandied around everywhere. But you never hear it these days. I'll admit, I thought the industry had legs and would penetrate a small percentage of the market, and it has but much less than I thought. These consumer trends are so hard to pick, and I wonder which of the big money trends is the next one to blow up? Do you know one, a government-subsidised one???? One springs to mind.  Reply to [email protected]
