Dodgy Practises

We are getting some good feedback on the right to repair story. Take a read here. Most agree that it's needed. But what we have uncovered is how bent parts of the Vehicle and Machinery repair industry are. One independent Mechanical Shop owner whom I have visited and know said this: "Hi Dwain, I wanted to give you my take on "right to repair". The fact is people have been doing it under the table for decades. I am in my 27th year of running my own Mechanical repair business. Many times, I have people come to me with stories of lack of service or (criminally) no service at all. By this I mean put a service sticker on and do not touch the vehicle at all. I know a heavy Vehicle Mechanic who works at a dealership - I asked him about the issues - and he said, "I really don't know how we are still open". I have zero sympathy for the Dealerships in any area. They are ruthless, dishonest and, most only see the customer as a cash cow". Read more in the replies below. We had an experience just this week. We dropped our ageing SUV off at a Mechanic some 45 min from home; the acceleration is like it has a governor on it, so it's slow to pick up. Paula rang up to see if it was ready, and he said he just got it in the garage; he rang back 5 minutes later and said he wasn't going to touch it because the fault was electrical. He told us to write it off. He then charges us $110 for 5 minutes of work. I'm not pissed off with that because he did have a look, but many would be.
