Hay Carting on the sabbath….
One of our subscribers sent this in: "G'day Dwain, We used to knock out in a good year if the Hay Stacks were empty 12-13,000 "idiot bricks", depending on the volume of Fodder in each paddock. Once done, the Apex Club would assemble on a Sunday (2 weeks) with a fleet of members, Trucks, and all the gear to load and stack, then get into it. What a bonding session, school teachers, chemists, bankers, stock agents, most doing a job completely unfamiliar. At the end of the day, Dad would have the Southwark cans on ice and a Hogget cut into chops on the go. This took 2 Sundays and was the biggest fundraiser they did. When Dad turned 40, that was mandatory retirement from Apex; then the Mundulla Footy Club took over, and they took it to another level. Never a fire.....". How good is that? It got me thinking about some of the things we did at Marnoo, and I remember one left-field thing was before a pre-season Football game; the ground was really hard and dry. We never had a sprinkler system as such, so with the game a fortnight away, the club thought they better do something about it. So they did this. There was a big rain two months earlier, and the creek that runs around one side of the ground had water in it. So, the whole community turned up with pumps, pipes, sprinklers and water Trucks and flooded the ground. There was a follow-up water a week later, and the practice match the following weekend. The players were grateful. What have been some of your memorable community events? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
