How to make a big margin from Beef
I have to say I love my Beef Jerky, and if I am in a shop that stocks it, I will usually buy some. I try not to keep it at home as I know it won’t last. I was at the Malmsbury Store posting something when I saw some Nobby Beef Jerky and thought I would grab some and head off. I ate it and thought, gee, there’s not much in this. So, it got me thinking about what the cost per kilo was. The price for the pack (25 grams net) was $5.50 at the Malmsbury store. I threw the pack in the bin before I thought of the experiment and went and bought another at Kyneton IGA ($4.50) and also bought some of Mikes Beef Jerky at Hardwicks retail meat outlet in Kyneton. It cost $12 per pack for 90 grams net.. FYI, Mikes is my favourite. I know these are retail prices, and it’s not what Nobby’s or Mike’s are getting, but at the Malbsbury Store, the Nobby’s pack was $220/kg, at IGA, it was $180/kg, and the Mikes Jerky was $133.33/kg. See below. I assume they would use a lesser cut, so they are making a pretty good margin and good on them. They would have to sell a lot to make a decent business out of it, and they have their costs as well. But one thing I did think of was Nobby’s has shelf space everywhere because they sell nuts and crackles as well. They get access to a lot of outlets. So the highest Jerky per kg is probably selling the most volume. Smart Nobby’s smart. It’s easier said than done, I know that, but that, my friends, is how you make money out of Beef. What other things do you know that can generate a big margin like that? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
