Consolidation in Farming has been going on for a long time now, and many of you will have noticed various changes in the communities you live in. This Farm consolidation has seen many rural communities struggle for numbers, which affects community dynamics. But there is another trend happening on top of that I was reminded of yesterday. It’s the trend of Farmers moving into towns/cities rather than living on their Farms. We have written about it before, and there are a number of reasons why Farming families do this. However, it’s having a profound effect on some Farming areas. When the Farming family is living in town, they more often than not play sport there, do their shopping and conduct business in these towns, and they benefit from this extra economic activity. The Rural area loses out as the Farmer becomes less involved in the community, they are there less. It becomes a tale of two, one losing and the other gains. Plus, the kids become townies and are less likely to learn the skills required to be Farmers. These little tweaks add up. Different Farming areas will see this trend in a different light. Isolation is becoming a real issue in the bush, and this trend is only adding to it. I am not sure how it can be reversed as it’s the right of people to live where they like.
