I seem to be reporting on a lot of podcasts lately. We went through a month or two when the Ag-based podcast got a little bit thin as far as quality was concerned, but they are back now. I was listening to James Wagstaff, who is editor of the Weekly Times on the Humans Of Agriculture podcast, yesterday morning. He was talking about the changes that have happened with their publication and how it has changed over the years from a paid per-paper to a digital subscription model. Right now, in mainstream media, there is a changing of the guard, with what I call the niche newsletter replacing the broader content and traditional newspaper delivery style. You might call me biased, as that’s what we do. I would subscribe to 7 or 8 of these newsletters, and they seem to provide me with invaluable content and knowledge each week. The Land, Weekly Times, etc will also survive but only in digital form, which will affect their advertising revenue. But you can still read the paper version of The Land if you are a Farm Online subscriber; it just takes about 16 clicks to get there. And when you do get there, the paper equivalent is full of old news, some a week old. The newsletter platform I use (Beehiiv) has an interesting advertising model. They, Beehiiv, attract the advertisers, and the advertisers nominate or bid on which newsletters they want to advertise in, and if you allow them, you get paid for the clicks they receive on their ads. I think this is brilliant. There are plenty more trends happening, too many to mention. Another story for another day.
