No 405 - Wednesday's Club Notes

The “Club Notes” for Wednesday, the 8th of January, 2025.

Non-emotional enterprise

I was listening to the Head Shepherd podcast yesterday morning that featured Matthew Coddington from the Roseville Park Merinos stud, located South of Dubbo in NSW. Take a listen here and see our review below. Matthew, being in the stud game, is a committed Sheep man, and that’s his core business and where his passions lie. He sounds like an astute businessman and has geared his property up so the core Sheep business is not compromised when the lower rainfall seasons come along. When seasons are good, and they have excess feed, he then indulges in the non-emotional enterprise (to him) of Cattle trading. He uses Cattle trading for opportunistic pursuits, which can top up income in the good season. Farming is all about getting as much in as possible in the good seasons and not going backwards in the not-so-good ones. It’s relatable in a Livestock enterprise, and a Cropping enterprise might run Lambs on Stubbles or in a Feedlot as a non-emotional enterprise that’s value-adding. I am sure there are different types of these enterprises that Farmers use from time to time. Do you have an opportunity or non-emotional enterprise you call on when the opportunity arises?  Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
