Where the characters used to roam

We spoke about “Wacky” Jack Taylor last week and how everyone considered him a character. He was sorta like the Arthur Daley of the Minder show. It got me thinking how lucky I was growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s in the Marnoo area. It was back before real Farm consolidation, and there were enough people around to support a Golf and Football Club in the winter, alongside a Cricket and Tennis Club in the Summer. And growing up then, there were plenty of other characters around, like “Wacky” Jack. The place was full of them and there are many stories I could relay that would have you in stitches. A sneak peek of all those old CUB beer ads (I added 2 more this morning that feature a couple of legends in the “Other Ag Stuff”. Classics) we put up last week to add to the memory of what the people were like back then. It was just a great era where life was pretty simple, at least we thought it was. I even wrote a small column in the local weekly rag called “The Square Leg files”, which was a little fun/gossip column taking the piss out of some of the local characters. It was a must-read. Now, the population has dwindled, and many of the old legends are 6-foot under. It begs the question, where are all the characters now? There’s still some there, but I do wonder, in this day and age where conforming takes centre stage, does it allow our inner character to come out? Do you feel this is the case? Can you remember some of the characters in your area?  Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
