The rise of the Ag analyst

You could argue that the standard of Ag journalism has dropped over the years. Or could it be that there are fewer but better journos delivering the news now? Not sure. Most of the Ag news we get comes in a syndicated form these days; what I mean by that is that one journo will write an article, and it goes into all the Ag publications to reach a wider but smaller audience. So now, it's more national news than, say, The Land doing NSW stuff and The Farm Weekly doing WA news, etc. Is this good or bad? I'd say it's less popular and not as interesting. But it's the rise of the Ag analyst that has helped current day journos in the Ag space. These analysts are on speed dial and act as column fillers for journos who don't actually specialise in one particular sector/subject. They consult the analyst or expert for specialist commentary. Often, these analysts are asked for their crystal ball view. Simon Quilty is one. I love reading Simons's stuff because he is having a calculated punt at the future of the Livestock markets here and overseas. I have heard him speak and quoted many times and he never talks about the past. It's the future we want to hear about. Good on these analysts for making a living out of a particular market segment they love. Once upon a time, the journalist was the analyst. Do you think that Ag journalists have got better, worse or tracked sideways? Which Ag analyst do you like to follow? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
