No 427 - Tuesday's Club Notes

Warts and all

This weekend gone, I took 3 enthusiastic Farmers on an all-expenses paid trip to visit Nigel and Kate Kerin's Farm near Yoeval, NSW. We left mid-Saturday morning, spent the day on the road and arrived in Dubbo about 6:30 pm. The next morning, we ventured out to Nigel and Kate's house, where we sat down and had hours of round table conversation about what the Kerins are doing within their business and how they aim to tackle their Farming future. We then took off and got the grand tour around what I can only describe as a Property that is to be very proud of and one where productivity is not left to chance. The infrastructure is amazing and blew us all away with the attention to detail and the uniformity of it all. We then retreated back to the homestead for lunch and further discussions. We went through a range of topics and some of the problems we all had in our businesses and offered each other advice and verbal solutions. It was then time to check out the Kerin Ag Farm books, and that's where we got a sneak peek of what it was like to run a multi-enterprise business fully focussed on making margin and maximising profitability. Nigel and Kate started this business from scratch (zero) in 2007 and have built it into one of Australia's cutting-edge Farming businesses. What was not lost on the crew that attended was the time Nigel and Kate took out of their Sunday to educate all of us. We don't do enough sharing in Ag, and after this weekend, I am going to encourage each Farmer to open their gates where they see fit to tell their story.
