The Halliday way
Retired wine expert James Halliday is a great example of someone making a living out of an industry they loved. It's the ultimate, where what you do to earn a crust is something you are passionate about, and it doesn't ever feel like work. It was probably simpler than that. He may have thought, jeez, I like drinking this stuff. How do I turn it into a business? And he did. His wine column in The Australian went on for 40 years, and he wrote over 70 books in his time, including his annual wine guide each year. The wine industry was as good to him as he was for the industry. By being the face of the industry, he was a constant walking billboard and had followers all over the world who sought his advice on what to drink. See snippets from an article yesterday in the "Ag People" section. I guess we can relate it to Farming. Some of you have a deep love of Farming that doesn't feel like a job at times, but at times, it can feel like the hardest job in the world. So it begs the question of how we go about refining what we do so we can focus on the things we love doing and drop off or delegate the things that are a chore. Easier said than done if you are a 1, 2 or 3-person operation. We talk about purpose a lot, and the other day, we wrote about the Japanese saying, "finding you ikigai", which is your reason for being. James certainly found his, and you may have found yours too, but if you haven't, start thinking about how you can work towards it. Have you worked out what you are passionate about?
