The 1 2 3 of employing

We all have it etched into our brains that it’s hard to find people. It’s a default thought these days. We have written about it a lot, and I agree it is difficult but not impossible. Not impossible if you have a couple of things in order. I remember writing about how we need to have our accommodation sorted before we even think about employing someone. That’s paramount, especially on a Farm. Are we going to accommodate them on the Farm or find them a house in town? But I reckon there is something that comes even before the accommodation. It’s Farm infrastructure. In this day and age, you need to have above average and functional Farm infrastructure for you to first attract someone but, more importantly, to have someone thrive in their position so they are producing many multiples of what you are paying them. By Farm infrastructure, I mean if there is Livestock involved, there needs to be a good yard, handling facilities, laneways, good fences, technology, etc. Cropping it could be Machinery, technology, shedding, etc. So when it comes time to employ that person, they will not be spending time doing menial tasks or continuously fixing things. They will be more managing and adding value. So when it comes time to employ someone, have the infrastructure thing done first (1), then the accommodation second (2), and once that is Mickey Mouse, then you can start looking for someone (3). And then sell this infrastructure and accommodation benefits as something that is going to make their tenure a better experience.
