Sometimes naivety pays
I listened to the Ag Watchers podcast yesterday morning on my walk that featured Leila and Sean McDougall from “Just A Farmer” movie fame. Apart from the movie Leila and Sean Farm at Tatyoon in South West Victoria. Take a listen here. I have watched most of the movie and found it pretty heavy, so I haven't quite finished it yet. But what a great thing to do! Making people aware of what can happen to you or your neighbour is a great thing to do. I take my hat off to them. In this podcast, Leila made some interesting observations about the Aussie filmmaking industry. She said that only 2 per cent of films ever get completed, and only 4 per cent of those ever get distributed and make it to the big screen, TV or streaming. And we thought Farming was tough… Leila said she didn't know those stats before she started, and she and her husband self-funded and self-distributed the film, which is so rare in the industry. She outlined that production costs were around 2.5 million, so let's hope they got a decent return on that investment. Leila did say that if she had known those stats, she may not have started. But I'm calling baloney on that; they are Farmers, and Farmers have a crack, and that's what they have done here. So whatever the outcome financially, they made a success of it, and it would have been an experience of a lifetime. Over 700,000 people watched it the other night on Channel 9. It got me thinking that when we go into some big project, it pays not to go too deep into the past as there could be red flags everywhere, which will put you off. Sometimes naivety pays. Leila also mentioned that our friends at the Australian government supply grants for a lot of Aussie films, many of which make bugger all in return. You know what I think of government grants. Well done to the McDougalls. How you have done it is exactly how a Farmer would have done it. Not the standard way. What did you think of the movie? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
