Shifting sands
Over at our Farm Tender business, we are observing something different: a new trend is emerging. The new trend is that Farmers who formerly bought new are now buying used. These Farmers have been busily upgrading their Machinery infrastructure when money was cheaper, new Machinery prices were less and there were tax incentives attached. It was a good time to buy new. Now money is more expensive. Machinery prices have jumped big time, and the incentives have lessened dramatically. Farmers haven’t lost their penchant for upgrading; they are just doing it in a different way. In the last 4 weeks, we have seen a mini Machinery buying boom. And it’s so different to the more prolonged one we experienced a few years back, one where things were scarce, the buying appetite with insatiable and priced were inflated. It’s all the opposite; it’s a much calmer market, prices are about where they should be, and negotiations are happening. Where does that leave the new Gear? I know Dealers were worried about the big auction happening in WA about now, but I don’t think it will have a great effect; I could be wrong. But I maintain that we need new buyers for us to have a stong used market. The used market could sustain itself for 3 to 5 years before the fleet started to age a bit. There would come a point where Farmers would have to start buying new again. Perhaps change might be forced upon the manufacturers if we get 2 or 3 negative growth years in a row.
