The “Club Notes” for Saturday, the 22nd of February, 2025.

Almost factory-like
I was talking to who I consider a very progressive Farmer who is adept in the 3 or 4 enterprises he has going on, but where I think he shines is in his Lamb-finishing operation. I’d say he has got that one down pat. He knows his numbers, where he needs to be for his buy price, what the cost to carry is (feeding) and what he’s going to get out the other end as far as price and kilos are concerned. It’s a well-oiled machine, almost factory-like. He was doing it with great margin pre-2002, and from 2002 to 2006 or somewhere around there, there was some grant money floating around for Farmers to build containment and Feedlot pens. He said somewhere in that time period the game changed. Why? Because Farmers learnt how to feed Lambs, and there was increased competition from the Stubble buyers who saw an opportunity. So basically, there was more competition on the buy side, and this meant that Farmers naturally had to pay more, which ate into the margin and according to my Farmer friend, it’s never been the same since. What have you encountered with buying and selling Lambs over the years? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
