No 448 - Friday's Club Notes

The “Club Notes” for Friday, the 28th of February, 2025.

The Black Sheep

See at the top of the “Sheep, Wool & Lamb” section below at the post from renowned Sheep Breeder Tom Bull. He has this Ram (the one in the picture), which is his top-ranked Primeline Maternal in the entire drop (and he was born and raised a quad). There’s only one problem. He’s black when Primelines are supposed to be white. So what happens now? If they use this special Ram over the run-of-the-mill Primeline Ewes they will turn the flock coloured, or do they disregard him to keep the flock pure? Tom’s son has said he wants to use him as a foundation sire for a new Black Primeline breeding program. The question is, do we have to break through another paradigm and keep the breed moving forward at the expense of the look of the flock? Remember, it’s the performance of the Sheep that puts $$ in your pocket, but they are in the Ram selling game too, and would clients shy away if the colours were mixed? Farmers tend to like uniformity when it comes to a Sheep flock. It’s like when Beef Farmers first saw the Wagyu breed; they were in shock at how awful they looked, but it’s what goes on inside the animal and the performance that counts. Once they realise that, they get over the paradigm of how bad they look. What are some of the built-in paradigms you have had to get over? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
