Old Wool stores

We are doing some renovations on our little Farm house and have moved out for 3 or 4 months. We are staying at our son's place in Geelong and a mate's place in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, alternating between the two. I have been walking the streets after hours, and both cities have great old Wool Store history. There are some magnificent Wool Store buildings around that have been repurposed into units, storage centres and the like. These buildings still carry the signage from yesteryear. Seeing so many of these buildings around just goes to show what a massive industry the Wool industry once was. These buildings have been made to last, and I'm sure when they built them, they would have envisaged that the industry would continue for many centuries beyond then. I was talking to a former Wool industry player yesterday and we got talking about China and how they always want to buy everything at the cheapest rate, including our Wool. I said to him that you could say then that the Chinese single-handedly buggered the Wool industry. He said no, we (as in Australia) buggered the Wool industry for ourselves by giving up our Wool manufacturing advantage to China. In a lot of cases, they took the Machinery from here and set it up over there. If we had retained the industry here, it might have been a different industry, he said. All the Chinese have done is grab an opportunity, take control and attach their business ethos to it, and we have probably struggled ever since. Where do you think the Wool industry mistakes have been made?  Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
