Crime worrisome

Like you, I love going to country towns and places like Moree and Goondiwindi. They are iconic Farming towns that have carved out their own history. But these two towns are under threat, under threat by a crime wave that is scaring the locals and has us questioning whether to go there or not. Although not at that level yet, they are turning into a mini Alice Springs, which has been all but destroyed by Aboriginal youth crime. And let's call it for what it is: the majority of this crime wave is caused by Aboriginal youth. The people doing these crimes have zero regard for the law. Moree is holding a community meeting to try and do something about it, and the state government has given them $2 million to fight it. It's mighty important that they get this one right. See a couple of snippets I snapped out of The Australian newspaper over the weekend in the "Places" section below. The people living in these towns now have to adopt city-like security with the fear that they will be next on the list. No longer can you leave your house unlocked or the keys in the car when you go down the street. In Goondiwindi, the trend at one stage was to smash down the motel door, steal your vehicle keys, drive the vehicle across the border into NSW, destroy it and walk away laughing. How traumatic would that be? What do you think we can do about Rural crime like this? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
