John Richards looks into the future

We did a podcast with John Richards, the founder of Goldacres, this week, and it was a wonderful interview with a great Agricultural entrepreneur. Take a listen on Spotify here or on Apple Podcasts here. Towards the end of the podcast, we took a bit of a look into the future. We asked him about the growing technology around Broadacre Spot Spraying, and he said it was coming into play and that there were all sorts of things that could be identified in Crop. The advancements, in time, will save Farmers a lot of money on Chemicals. I asked him about Autonomous Sprayer, and he said they were working with SwarmFarm and made a Trailing Sprayer to fit behind the SwarmFarm Tractor. But he questioned just how Autonomous it might be in the short term because you still need to fill the Sprayer and have someone close by. Drones were next, and he was very bullish on them, saying they were very effective and manageable. I asked if biologicals will start to replace synthetic Chemicals, and he replied, saying: "Logic would tell you that there's money being spent to develop these things. No doubt that something will come out of it". I would summarise his comments as this: 1) Broadacres Spot Spraying - Game changer. 2) Automation - Coming but a while off yet before we get to full automation. 3) Drones - Very capable. 4) Biologicals replacing Synthetic Chemicals - Will have spots in the market in time.
