Emerging….
Containment areas have been a game changer for the Sheep industry. It has allowed producers to run more intense operations that are better managed. But we need to look for the next game changers in the Sheep industry, and I throw my opinionated hat in the ring and say it's Feedlotting. Gerard Roney, a Farmer from Ballarat and owner of Advantage Feeders is leading the charge and is helping to educate the masses. He just finished a series of 9 Feedlotting Workshops through NSW and he said this: "They have ranged from 15-55 people each event and averaged 35 people. What we have noticed is the attendees are larger scale Farmers than our previous workshops. More Feedlotting happening in the Henty to Dubbo area compared to the Armidale to Bathurst area". That was after having 350 over 3 days at his own on-Farm Feedlot event. You also get another trigger when some of the best minds in the game do a day touching and checking in on each other's system and swapping notes. See the “Sheep and Wool” section. Farmers learning from Farmers. Sam Van Assche, who was on the podcast we just did, has really focussed on Lotfeeeding Lambs and even makes his own custom Feed, which he also sells to others and has turned into a business on its own. Listen to the podcast here. The Lamb industry is in a very long shadow when it comes to our Cattle Feedlotting friends, and you'd argue it's been the making of the Cattle industry. And I'm sure if introduced professionally, it can add infinite value to the Lamb and Sheep industry. Intensifying is the way forward for Aussie Farming. Do you think Feedlotting, of some sort, is the way ahead for the Sheep industry? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
