Build another Griffith
I have a mate who has just moved to the Wagga Wagga area and hasn't had much exposure to the Riverina before. He is from Gippsland, and the Riverina had never really been in his line of sight as far as travelling around was concerned. Since he has been living there, he has taken a liking to Griffith and the surrounding area. We got chatting about what a great place it is and how the development of Griffith and the implementation of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) was great foresight and an engineering marvel. Imagine if we could build another Griffith somewhere else. It would be a major boost for Australian Agriculture, and without putting a dampener on things, it's just not in the government's DNA anymore to do something like that. Yes, they will build road tunnels and rail infrastructure in the cities in exchange for votes. But as far as needle-shifting infrastructure projects in the bush, that ship sailed long ago. And because the government is not in favour of it, the private sector would be reluctant to do something like this because there would be government tripwires (tape) galore. A repeat of infrastructure programs like the MIA is long gone. Mini versions, maybe, and any sort of advancement will be incremental and will come from the private sector with a smattering of government funding meshed in. When did we last build a decent dam?
