Wayne Hawkins podcast

Wayne Hawkins is a Farmer at Frances on the SA/Vic border. The Hawkins family collectively run a lot of country in that area. I know Wayne pretty well, and I'd have to say he is one of the most passionate Farmers I have ever met. He loves it, and at the age of 71, he still loves it. In fact, he's one of those blokes that loves life. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did, and I'm sure there are wisdoms to take away. Listen on Spotify here or on Apple below.

Automation acceleration

We spoke yesterday in the paid section on below and above-the-line jobs and how AI (not the insemination one) can transfer above-the-line jobs that humans do to below the line, which machines can do. Broden Holland, an influential Farmer out Young (NSW) way, said in an X post when doing some tillage work on a new block he bought that you need an automated Tractor for that kind of up-and-down job. Read his post below in the "Machinery" section. By up-and-down, I mean you don't have to think too much about the actual job, and it's interesting that automating things on the Farm is starting to occupy their mind. It got me thinking about what jobs on the Farm that are now above the line because they require us to do them can move below the line. Half mundane Farm jobs like Cultivation, picking up Hay bales and stacking them, mustering Cattle, and some spot Spraying has already been automated, etc. So you see how you can aim, let's say, in 5-10 years' time to get 30 or 40 per cent of your jobs below the line where they might take nil or very little human involvement. It doesn't guarantee you become more efficient in the short term as there is investment to do this, but once that investment has been realised or paid for, that's when the gains might surface. What jobs have you already put below the line, and what tasks in the future can you put below the line? Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900

Story 3 - Racket and ruin - The on-Farm tennis court would have to be classified as one of the worst investments ever. I reckon 90 per cent of the Farms I go on that have….
