A bit of "blackout Bowen" madness... Part 1

We had another huge response from our renewable energy story yesterday. Read it here. I had a reply from a person who has got to understand a little about what's ahead when it comes to decommissioning this infrastructure. This is what he said - "Hi Dwain, Renewable energy sites, when their used-by date is up, it will be just like an outdated Ackie Bar (Ackland) when no-till emerged 40 odd years ago, only there is a slight difference in the disposal cost. Find a peppercorn tree, Bobs your uncle!! Ackie Bar found a rusting place. I was involved in negotiations to build a 90-megawatt solar farm in Central Vic for 7 years with Al Vogt, a German company that developed the solar farm to the point of construction, and then it would get sold to Origin Energy. Fortunately, it didn't get built after we signed the first deed option lease, but when it came time to renew the lease option, we sourced more professional legal advice, and what a can of rattle snakes did we discover? In Australia, 98% of renewable solar and wind farms are built on Land owned by the deed option leaseholder, who inevitably is responsible for the clean up when they - I was going to list them, but there are that many reasons that in 10, 20, 30 years time they won't want the responsibility of decommissioning. It is a ballpark figure in the U.S.A. of about $USD300 to $USD350,000 per megawatt to remove and rehabilitate the Land, say half a million Aussie, that was going to be $45,000,000 to clean up our little patch of "blackout Bowen" madness. God help any landowner when the EPA steps in and demands the clean-up process"…...more below. It continues in the paid section below. If you sign up, I will send it to you. I know we can bang on about this stuff, but it's important for our and our Farming family's future. Imagine facing this.  Reply to [email protected] or 0427 011 900
